Greece Needs Socialism As An Answer To Austerity

Thursday, July 16, 2015

The Greek parliament passed a referendum on 15th July 2015, which was proposed by Tsipras led 'radical left' Syriza regime to meet the austerity demands of the creditors of Greece, disguised by the 'leftist' Prime Minister as a measure to save 'Grexit', the short hand to denote the exit of Greece from the Euro Zone.

The parliament motion faced stiff resistance and stirred up dissent among the left within Syriza, including the former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and others, who expressed their opposition to the austerity measures adopted by the Prime Minister Tsipras with support from the right wing political parties to appease the EU-ECB-IMF Troika.

The 180 degree turn around by Tsipras led Syriza regime has caused great political turmoil in the country, as the government move of further imposing austerity measures will throw the people of Greece, especially the working class, into the deep well of utmost poverty along with inflation that will skyrocket immensely. The unemployment graph of Greek is already at the northern peak and social security, pension and small savings of the working class will be impacted further to meet the Prime Minister's 'realistic' measures.

The communists, left trade unions and progressive left people along with the overwhelming majority of the working class of Greece are strongly opposing this capitulationist move of the Syriza, which promised a reversed course on austerity to Greek people during the elections and has overturned the mass demand of 'no' to austerity measures as per the recently held plebiscite on the issue held on 5th July.

The mass referendum was planned by Tsipras himself and he even announced his resignation in case the nation asks to surrender to the austerity demands of the creditor. However, soon after the majority of the nation, hurt by the austerity measures imposed since last five years, called for a no surrender to the austerity demands of the creditors, Tsipras forced Yanis Varoufakis to resign from the position of Finance Minister as per the demand of the creditors who were reluctant to discuss bailout measures with him due to his adamant standpoint on the austerity demands. This was the first sign of the capitulation of the so called left regime of Athens to the demands of the Troika.

Once the creditors, especially the German monopoly capitalist hawks, threatened to throw out Greece off the Euro league leaving the country with utmost bankruptcy, the Athens regime capitulated to the demands of austerity going against its earlier hyped line of no compromise on the question of national dignity. The Tsipras government showed its true colour, hidden inside the left cloak and rhetoric, of an imperialist stooge with no intention to wage any national struggle against the harsh punishments imposed by the imperialist Troika.

The problem of the European left is that it is influenced by utmost opportunism, Trotskyism, and revisionism. Syriza is no different despite its rhetoric and promises. As soon as the pressure of international finance capital increases it succumbs to the demands of the imperialist hawks and gave in.

The Greek debt crisis was caused by excessive borrowing by the big corporations, the banks and capitalists with the active support of the corrupt politicians of the right holding office. To cover up the debts the balance sheet of the government was repeatedly fabricated until it became impossible for the ruling clique to hide them, as the debt payment consumed a higher portion of the total Greek GDP. The Greek people never received any benefit from the debts and normally should not be victimised for the act of greed of large corporations and politicians.

The ultimate solution to the Greek problem can come through a complete and radical transformation of the Greek state with the working class assuming power, nationalisation of all industries, rejection of all foreign debts, development of a national economy focused on providing employment to the people and strengthening national defence. The exit from the Euro zone is very much important as the Euro currency itself imposes dependence on the German - Franco imperialist powers, makes it mandatory for nations in the zone to act as pawns of the German-Franco big monopoly capital and pursue the economic and political policies formulated by Berlin-Paris-Washington-London in these countries. The European Union is not an union of nations with equal rights, but a tool to colonise backward European nations by the developed ones supported by US imperialism.

The Greek people must wake up against these forces of reaction, must build their destiny themselves and march towards a Greek revolution to build up a socialist and powerful Greece by overthrowing the rule of big foreign monopoly capital and their agents. Only a socialist Greece can be an answer to the European Union dictatorship which is forcing all backward capitalist nations to reel under the juggernaut of its exploitation through austerity measures.
