My Country is not Your Country and Your Country is not my Country
Friday, February 19, 2016As the hyper-nationalists and self-styled patriots with vermillion laced foreheads are screaming "Bharat Mata ki Jai" on the streets while thrashing the unarmed left activists and students, the thought that is bothering people like us, i.e. the workers, peasants, toiling people, Dalits, tribals, minorities, oppressed women, oppressed nationalities, and everyone whose life is screwed up in this country, both in the metaphorical and literal sense, is what does "patriotism" actually mean?
For the ruling dispensation, the Bhakt genre troll of online and offline versions, for their patron - the khaki half-pant clad RSS goons- patriotism means displaying extreme chauvinism, blended with jingoistic fervour and xenophobia. Their nationalism and patriotism, alike their politics, is centred on the Hindutva doctrine developed by the British stooge Vinayak Savarkar nearly one century ago.
The subsidiaries of the RSS subscribe to the narrow and vulgar version of nationalism, which promotes an uncritical approach towards the matter of the state as well as the ruling classes. For them, patriotism is the unconditional subjugation to the policies of the state machinery that is controlled by the big comprador capitalists, foreign monopoly and finance capital, and the big feudal landlords. For them, nationalism means supporting each act of the state machinery, which they have synonymised with the country. If you cannot accept the act of the state machinery or feel discontented with its policies, the Hindutva brigade reserves the liberty of not only stamping you as an anti-national, but to also ensure that you're thrashed to death or coma in full public view, under the patronage of the police force provided by the state-machinery.
These very patriots and their colonels call the extreme plunder of India by the large multinational corporations and their Indian subsidiary comprador capitalists as an act to develop the nation. It is quite patriotic for them to support the extensive military campaign against the poorest of the poor sections of the Indian people, and due to their brokerage interests, any opposition or resistance to the plunder of our motherland by foreign corporations is called anti-national. These outfits, the offspring of the RSS, are not fringe and ideologically bankrupt organisations fighting on their own, rather from their inception, the RSS and its offspring organisations have closely worked as the Indian branch of the global fascist brigade, which now takes orders from the Pentagon and White House.
The global modus operandi of fascism
The fascist forces follow a uniform approach all over the world to carry forward their agenda, which generally focus on driving a wedge between the people, pit one section of the people against another and incite communal or racial hatred.
The fascists, universally, are hardcore misogynist and strongly advocate a patriarchal society; they stereotype women as weak, vulnerable and consider men as the supreme being. This is the very reason why the fascists of most countries identify their country as - mother. Not due to the fertility of the soil and the nurturing of nature, but to depict the country as a vulnerable and hapless entity, which is threatened by hostile powers from within and outside. This conceptualisation of the country as a mother helps the fascist forces to fuel extreme chauvinism, jingoism and xenophobia among their support base, which apart from the rich generally consists of the elite upper middle classes, intelligentsia, and a section of the lumpen proletariat.
The fascists are the military-worship cult, they tend to develop their own militia at places where it is legal, and they develop quasi-military structures wherever they get a chance. Speaking against the military and its atrocities is considered blasphemy by the fascist thugs in every country of the world. They ask for unconditional faith in the military and other armed forces of the country and prohibits any criticism of the military atrocities on people.
In the global context, fascism thrives by hyping communal and racial hatred against a particular community of the society they operate in. For example, while in Germany the Nazis targeted the Jews, in Israel the Zionist ruling bloc has targeted the Arab Palestinians, and in India, the fascist Hindutva brigade has targeted the Muslims and the Christians as their principal enemy.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the US and its Western allies were searching for a formidable opponent in the geopolitical arena to keep its military-industrial complex mint profit and to divert the attention of the people, away from the monstrous outcomes of the neo-liberal economic policies, which are since laden on more than 95 % of the world by the governments subservient to the US and pledged to the IMF-World Bank-WTO troika to open up their economy to ensure greater profits for American and Western corporations.
In order to divert that attention towards another perceived "global threat", it was necessary for the US and its allies to create a monster. The Mujahedeen fighters of Afghanistan, who were "our boys" of the US administration during its proxy war with the Soviet Union over the occupation and plunder of Afghanistan, became the pawns of the US and its allies to play that very role of a global threat.
Salafist-Islamic terrorism was funded by the US through its stooges like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf monarchies. The corporate media and the CIA worked closely to magnify the Islamist terror outfits and used it to fuel Islamophobia in the world. The attacks on the Twin Towers of World Trade Centre on 11 September 2001, helped the George Bush-led US administration to use it as a pretext to launch military aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq, with an intention to build a buffer of fuel security for the ever-growing thirst of the US oil corporations.
Under the guise of "war on terror", the US and its Western allies, like Britain, ensured a smooth pipeline route of fuel from Central Asia and secured oil fields in Iraq by installing a puppet regime in Baghdad.
These atrocities and wars angered the Muslim people of Asia and other parts of the world against the West and the US, the very powers they always hated for their support to the Zionist Israel and arch-reactionary Saudi monarchy, the staunch enemies of the people of Middle-East Asia.
The anger crystallised into consolidation of the political power of the reactionary Mullahs, the paid stooges of the US and its allies, who portrayed the aggression of the West on the Muslim people as a religious conflict between Jews-Christians on one hand and Islam on the other. With the help of Saudi monarchy, these people recruited agents who would carry on fringe attacks and spread fundamentalism among the Muslims across the world to add justification to the US part of the story.
This story is still going on, and Islamophobia has paid huge dividends to the US and its allies. Islamophobia is now the best weapon and the common one, in the hands of the fascist forces all over the world, to stir up racial hatred and bigotry and unleash majoritarian violence on the Muslims in those places where they are in minority.
The revival of the Hindutva fascism in India
The Hindutva fascism in India got revived with the tacit support of the Congress Party-led government under Rajiv Gandhi during the mid-1980s. Rajiv Gandhi was the mastermind of the anti-Sikh pogrom following the assassination of his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He ensured that the terror of Hindutva fascists reigns and Sikhs are butchered in large numbers. To consolidate his upper-caste Hindu vote bank, Rajiv Gandhi fanned the communal movement centred around the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, which the followers of Savarkar and Golwalkar have claimed to be the birthplace of Hindu mythological figure Rama.
The Ram Janmabhoomi movement (movement for Rama's birth place) played the crucial part to boost the political fortune of the BJP, which only had two members in the parliament until the 1980s. The communal movement was centred on the aggressive tones of Brahminical fascism, which portrayed the Muslims as a threat to the Hindu religion and called upon the Hindus to join the brigade to demolish the Muslim relics and structures, starting with the Babri Masjid.
The aggressive campaigning by the BJP and other RSS outfits, helped the Congress in particular and the ruling classes of India to divert the attention of the people towards Ayodhya from the burning issues like the massacre of thousands of Sikhs all over India, the imposition of a virtual emergency in Punjab, which helped the ruling classes to kill numerous Sikh people in the guise of fighting 'terrorism'; it also helped the government and the ruling classes to divert the mass attention and media focus from the massacre of thousands of innocent people in Bhopal, who were killed by poisonous gas leak from the US-owned Union Carbide's plant.
The communal programme also helped the government and the ruling classes to hide the enormous crisis in which the Indian economy was mired during the late 1980s and 1990s, the crisis which was an outcome of the massive economic crisis in the Soviet Union, the principal investor in India and one of its largest trading partners.
The collapse of the USSR made the Indian government look for a new master and the US came for its relief; through the World Bank and IMF, the US ordered the then Indian Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao to include one of the World Bank direct nominees in the Central Cabinet. Entered Manmohan Singh, whose neo-liberal economic policies became a more painful curse for the Indian people, who were already reeling under the extreme oppression of the Indian semi-colonial and semi-feudal system.
It was during that very period when the Indian government and its ruling classes switched their allegiance to their new masters based in the Wall Street that the Hindutva forces plunged into the volatile arena of the Indian polity by demolishing the Babri Masjid in 1992. The demolition of the Babri Masjid by the RSS and its offsprings was done with the intention to raise the anti-Muslim hysteria among the Hindus and to conform with the global strategy of US imperialism and its allies to promote Islamophobia.
The riots all over the country following the Babri Masjid demolition by the RSS and BJP created a platform for the ruling classes to promote communal hatred, stamp the entire Muslim community as a terrorist community, which was followed by indiscriminate arrests, torture, imprisonment and cold-blooded institutional murders of numerous Muslim youth.
It was also the Islamophobia that reigned over the upper-caste privileged Hindus of India that the Indian ruling classes, who are hardcore Brahminical bigots in nature, was used by the ruling Brahminical clique to impose martial law in Kashmir to suppress the genuine demand of independence raised by the people of the erstwhile kingdom annexed by India using deceitful measures.
Thousands of men, young and old, were killed in cold-blooded state-sponsored terror and hundreds of women were gang raped by the army and other paramilitary forces in Kashmir. The gory atrocities of the Indian state were covered up by amplifying the "patriotic" tune, to which the entire media, the film industry and other cultural outfits danced to make an average Indian Hindu believe that there was an Islamist uprising in India, which wants to break the nation and help the arch-rival Pakistan.
The corporate media since the 1990s kept on publishing thriller movie plots on how Muslim youth are aligning themselves with Pakistan, crossing borders to get trained in terrorism, etc. The Bollywood blockbusters also started depicting such plots to incite mass hysteria. This process got more wings during the rule of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. To add more sharpnels to its ammo, the Indian ruling classes forged close official ties with the US and Zionist Israel.
The anti-Muslim pogrom of Gujarat was launched by the helmsman of the present dispensation, Narendra Modi, to polarise upper-caste Hindu votes in favour of the BJP. The polarisation of the Hindu votes on communal lines and making the Dalits and backward caste people their docile tool against the Muslims and Christians has been a time-tested tool of the RSS affiliates since the neo-liberal economic era began in India.
Hindutva fascism survived and is growing in India due to the Brahminical prejudices of the ruling classes and the elite against other communities and lower castes in the country. The bureaucracy, the political establishments, the capitalist league and the ranks of feudal landlords are filled with upper-caste Hindus despite the so-called Dalit leader Ambedkar's constitution promising to uphold the rights of the minority, the Dalits and tribals, remaining in force. These forces of reaction support and fund the communal fascist RSS and its mass organisations like the BJP, to impose a communal dictatorship of the Brahminical upper-caste elites and to snatch away the hard earned minuscule rights of the working class and peasantry.
The question of nationalism
Following the similar pattern of the fascist forces operating worldwide on racial and communal lines, the Hindutva fascist brigade of India questions the 'nationalism' and spirit of 'patriotism' of the minority communities. They question the patriotism of the minorities, especially Muslims by carrying out smear deceitful campaigns against the community and by spreading hatred among the upper caste Hindu population using lies and slanders to farther their political goals.
For the fascist Hindutva brigade led by the Nagpur-based RSS headquarters, every individual or sociopolitical groups of the country that oppose the Sangh version of 'nationalism', does not approve its jingoism and ultra-chauvinistic polity- are anti-national enemies. These saffron goons are fascinated by the Nazi and Italian fascist version of nationalism, which made the nation and the state equivalent, nation and leaders like Hitler and Mussolini equivalent, and whoever opposed the policies of Hitler or Mussolini was branded as a traitor and lynched by the fascist mob.
In the Indian context, despite their traditional opposition to the Congress Party, which is the major political outfit of the feudal landlords, comprador capitalists and other usurers, the RSS affiliated outfits toes the line of the Congress on every issue of the state policy, and even propose far more reactionary measures.
The Kashmir issue has been one of the major acid testing parameters of "nationalism", the issue of the imposition of Hindi language and the culture of the North Indian upper-caste Hindus on the rest of the country is another such parameter. Whoever opposes or dissents with the state drawn lines on Kashmir, North-East, the armed forces and debates with democratic fervour, are called "terror-sympathiser" and "anti-national" followed with sedition charges. This opposition is not only confined to the political sphere, but, it extends to fields like sports, literature, arts, cinema, science, and academic space.
Discussion on the right of self-determination of the Kashmiri, Naga, Mizo, Manipuri and other people is not only a taboo but also calls for the severe persecution, even opposition to beef ban or consumption of meat can cause a public lynching of the accused by the storm troopers of the fascist brigade.
None, even people from the liberal democratic quarter, is not spared by the fascist Hindutva brigade if they express even the mildest dissatisfaction with the bigotry and jingoism of the RSS and its platoons. On each and every question they face from the disgruntled people of the country, the fascist RSS and its affiliates are liberal to use the stamp of 'traitor' on the dissenter and would leave no stone unturned to defame and humiliate their opposition using everything from smear campaigns to physical abuse or contract killing.
Patriotism of the Sangh Parivar is a concealer for its heinous crimes
While the Bhakts cry out tears of cow urine chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai", their regime is instrumental, alike the Congress, to sell every inch of the country to the big foreign monopoly and finance capital through their neo-liberal economic policies.
The BJP government is carrying forward the largest war against the tribals of India, which was initiated by the champions of neo-liberal economy -Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram of the Congress Party; under the banner of Operation Green Hunt, the military engagement against the tribals of Central and East India is now surpassing the military expeditions of the Indian ruling class in North Eastern sister states and Kashmir.
This war, which the Bhakts of RSS call patriotic, is a war launched by the BJP on behalf of global mining corporations and their Indian puppet subsidiaries like Tata-Adani-Ambani etc, using the money of the taxpayers. The goal of the BJP government is to evict the tribals from the forests and lands owned by their communities for centuries before the Aryans even stepped into the country.
The forests and hills have huge reserves of bauxite, gold, coal, and other minerals for which the global mining giants are drooling. They have forced the government to massacre people to let them mine without any resistance. The entire administrations of the states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, etc are working on the directions of the mining giants and their executive officers. People are killed, women are raped, children are massacred every day to bully the tribal people, who even remained indomitable even under the British rule.
The tribals, in conformity with their tradition and history, never surrendered to the greedy corporations drooling for their land, water and forests. They are fighting a heroic resistance struggle in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and all other parts of the country, where the governments of the respective states and at the centre are working full-time as servile agents of global monopoly and finance capital to sell off the country, the country that the tribals and aboriginal people owned once, to the foreign corporations.
It is like the return of East India Company II, in a more large scale, on a much larger territory, the successors of the traitor aristocratic nobility of the 18th-19th century India are now spreading the red carpet before the invading foreign capital, the government at central and state levels have turned into mere docile tools of the foreign aggressors, who are buying up and tying up all political entities with its massive wealth, because the corporate tycoons know that the gold, coal, bauxite and other minerals beneath the green zone of the country will multiply manifolds their initial investment in the country.
The middle classes and the elite English-speaking intelligentsia is brainwashed constantly by the corporations and their several arms, including their puppet media, educational institutes, voluntary self-help organisations, spiritual leaders, film and television personalities, sports bodies, and every one influential, saying that the ultimate goal of the nation, where more than half of the population survives with a paltry sum of less than one dollar a day, is to achieve immense economic development, the very development which will benefit a handful at the expense of tormenting broad masses of people.
The Sangh conglomerates will not properly explain whose development they are seeking by butchering men and children, by raping women, by burning down houses, evicting people on behalf of the foreign and domestic corporations. They will never tell us how their undaunted support to the Indian government's war against the tribals and the poor people serves their beloved Mother India's nationalist spirit. The Sangh affiliates will never clarify how raping nuns of the Missionaries providing free medicine and education to the poor people in Odisha can serve the purpose of strengthening the security of Bharat Mata.
They cannot explain anything; as these bunch of thugs gathered together by the RSS and its affiliates by luring them with power, money, women and alcohol, are sycophant stooges of the big foreign capital and their Indian subsidiaries. Their politics has one broad aim, which is to deter the poor masses of workers and peasants from uniting against the loot and plunder of the multinational corporations by inciting communal and caste hatred, so that the unity of the broad masses of the Indian workers-peasants-Dalits-Tribals-minority communities against the aggression of foreign capital on their lives and livelihood is smashed into pieces.
The biggest and the most crucial problem with the Sangh doctrine is that the Nagpur-based knicker clad septuagenarian Hindutva ideologues still live in the middle of the twentieth century, when it comes to them gauging the mood and the temperament of the people of India, especially the working class, the poor peasantry, and the toiling people; the majority of the population of India.
It is true that the Sangh and its political outfit, the BJP, became successful to polarise a large section of Indian upper middle classes from the upper caste Hindu society into its fan base. However, the same tools that helped them to polarise the upper caste, urban upper-middle class and elites in its favour, cannot work equally with the poor and the downtrodden masses of a multicultural and multiethnic country like India.
Unfortunately, for the BJP, and fortunately for the progressive forces, India is no Germany or Italy of the 1930s, where fascists could use immense wealth exploited from the colonies to buy-off an influential section of the working class in its favour. India is itself a semi-colony, which is looted by the foreign corporations, and this loot will not enrich the people, who will either be enslaved by the foreign corporations and their Indian comprador capitalists or evicted from their land and livelihood.
These disgruntled people will never become a partner of the plunderers and usurers, they will rather wage their just struggle against the fascist RSS and its offspring like the BJP. The entire forces at the disposal of the RSS and its entire platoons of upper caste elite Hindus will fall short to even face the growing rage of the mighty people of the country, the real owners of the country, the wealth producers of the society, against the exploitative and oppressive system.
The time has come when the collective struggle of the working class and the peasantry along with the supportive struggles waged in solidarity by the progressive and democratic forces will teach the BJP the poor people's version of nationalism and patriotism- by smashing and defeating the aggression on India by the foreign monopoly and finance capital, their Indian cronies and comprador forces, and the biggest support base of these two forces - the feudal production relation existing in the countryside. The nation needs liberation from fascism, from foreign corporations, from Indian comprador capitalists, from patriarchal feudalism and the stooges of the oppressive system like the BJP and the Congress.
Democracy and freedom are our birthrights and our patriotic people will fight till the end for them. The ideal country of the fascists is not the ideal country for the poor; the ideal country for the poor will not allow fascism to survive in its territory. Till the death of fascism, we shall fight and we shall win. For our own motherland, the land of hope, harmony, peace, and progress, we shall fight to reclaim our motherland, which is not the country of the fascists and to show the fascist Hindutva thugs that the country they are designing isn't our country.
